The web technology that combines data, audio and video was successfully soft-launched on Tuesday in the presence of D. Varadarajan, Chief General Manager, Tamil Nadu Circle, M. P. Velusamy, CGM, Chennai Telephones, and officials of Communication Experts Private Ltd, a U.S.-Indian joint venture firm that has developed the technology. The commercial launch nationwide is likely within a week, sources said. Though the ‘A3 Connect’ tool has been positioned as a technology solution for business managers, BSNL officials are hoping for patronage from a wider circle of technophiles in the city. CEPL claims that the technology will be robust enough to support a scenario of virtual workplace environments. Despite the complex set of functions involved, the user interface has been designed in the simple ‘plug and play’ mode. All one needs to get going is a personal computer, DataOne connection (with base upload bandwidth of 128 kbps) and a microphone-fitted web camera. The minimum RAM should be 512 MB and hard disk space 100 MB. The operating system should be Windows 2000 or Windows XP. To get started, users will have to download client software from the company domain and follow the instructions to complete installation. The A3 Connect icon will appear on the desk top. Users double-clicking the icon will activate a screen to choose user name and password to complete registration.
